Ashtanga Vinyasa is a compelling branch of Hatha yoga organized by K. Pattabhi Jois in the late 20th century and is now popularly known as modern yoga.
Ashtanga emphasizes muscle training and the cultivation of physical strength.
Founded by Jois in 1948, its name comes from the Sanskrit words ashṭa (eight) and aṅga (limbs), meaning 'Eight Limbs.' The style was named for the founder’s vision of creating eight progressive series of postures. However, the development stopped at the sixth series, as the sequences became so advanced that even highly experienced practitioners found them challenging to perform.
During the practice the student will perform Vinyasa, which explores the deep connection between mind, body, and breath. It is the mindful flow between asanas — the moments of transition — inviting the practitioner to remain fully present and attentive, even as one posture transforms into the next.
